Homicide Detective Ryan Carson is called to investigate the murder of Edwin Carlyle. The victim was killed, in his own home, execution style, by a single shot in the middle of his forehead. His wife and son have concrete alibis. There was no forced entry and nothing was taken. Carson arrest a young man, Kenneth Ingram, on suspicion of murder. Ingram had been the victim of unwanted sexual advances from Carlyle for the previous week. Ingram quit his job rather than work with Carlyle.Carson attends Carlyle's interment and sees Carlyle's son, Robbie, smile as his father is lowered into the grave. Was he being sexually abused by his father? Did Robbie hire someone to kill his father? Carson is unable to find sufficient evidence and is forced to release Ingram.Four months after Carlyle's murder, Carson is called to St. James church to investigate an apparent robbery gone bad resulting in the death of one of the priests, Father Alfred Harvey. Sue Ellen Frazier a new, attractive member of the Robbery Unit is assigned to accompany Carson. Father Harvey had been relieved of his ecclesiastical duties after being arraigned for sexual imposition. Carlyle had been a member of St. James church. Sue Ellen is also. Less than two weeks after the priest is found dead, there is another member of St. James, Aaron Stewart, killed mysteriously. A car pulled up to the curb at Stewart's house. Stewart goes to the car and speaks to the driver for a short time before the driver shoots him. Why was he killed? Who is killing the members of St. James? Is there any connection, other than being members of the same church? Carson hears of similar murders in other Police Districts. Are all of them connected and if so, how? And who?
