Health Counseling: An Applied Approach

This introduction to health counseling offers students a basic overview on how to use counseling skills to facilitate health behavior changes. With case studies and examples of sessions between a client and a counselor, educator, or other helping professional, students will learn how to apply the microskills developed by Allen Ivey. Chapters include those on behavior change theories and the legal and ethical issues in health counseling, including considerations of doing virtual counseling sessions via telehealth. A description of each of the skills is given and shown in examples. Their application is discussed in chapters on how to counsel people who are in search of birth control, with sexually transmitted infections, as well as clients who have asthma, hypertension, and alcohol use disorder.
